Why it’s important to be in the photographs with your newborn

Why it’s important to be in the photographs with your newborn – well when a new baby arrives, most parents naturally focus on photographing their precious new child. Often, one parent (frequently the mother) ends up behind the camera, ensuring their new baby is photographed, while they remain largely absent from the photographs themselves.

Being in photographs with your newborn is not about vanity, it’s about your bond, the precious moment, and long-term value – for both you and your child.

Photographs serve as records of a family’s beginning. Years from now, your child won’t just be interested in what they looked like as a newborn.   They’ll want to see who was there, how they were held, and what their earliest relationships looked like.

Photographs that include parents are really important. They show scale, connection, and reality. Without them, an important part of the story is missing.

Your child will care more than you think

Many parents avoid being photographed because they feel or look tired.   While those feelings are understandable, they are largely irrelevant to the person who will eventually view these images.

Children don’t analyse photographs the way adults do. They look for familiarity and presence. Seeing themselves with their parents in their earliest days reinforces belonging and identity which is something that becomes more valuable with time.  So don’t shy away from being in the photographs – they are really important!

You are part of the memory

Newborn photos are often revisited during milestones — birthdays, school projects, family conversations and so on.  I have families I have photographed for years who tell me they will look often at the newborn photographs. If you are consistently absent from early photographs, the visual narrative becomes incomplete.  And that isn’t right is it?

Being in the photo ensures you are part of the memory, not just the person who captured it.

Working with me will make this easier

One of the simplest ways to ensure you are included is to book a shoot with me.   As a professional I completely understand lighting, correct composition and timing.  I can make you feel your best and can create photographs that feel and look very natural.

And what’s more, you’ll be in the photographs, not behind the camera.

It’s about long term perspective

The importance of being in photographs with your newborn often isn’t fully realised in the early weeks. It becomes clear years later, when those photographs are among the few tangible records of a fleeting stage of life.

You don’t need to love how you look. You simply need to exist in the photographs.

Because one day, someone else will be very glad you did.
